Interact with Art – Modified Social Benches

14th July – 30th October 2016

Please touch the Art in Paseo Marítimo!

There’s a real artistic revolution happening in Ibiza and its Paseo Maritimo, started last year with Sagittarian Girls, Dan Graham’s masterpiece of Conceptual Art, and continuing this year with Jeppe Hein’s well known series of public sculptures Modified Social Benches.

Ventana Contemporary Ibiza together with the new cultural association Art Patrons Ibiza, in collaboration with the City of Ibiza present the project “Interact with Art”, now on show along the gardens of Paseo Juan carlos I (Paseo Marítimo of Ibiza) and in Marina Botafoch.
Inspired in the classic park benches, but re-invented to stimulate interaction in a playful way, Hein’s benches are especially designed to play, use, interact with, questioning the idea that “Art is not meant to be touched”.

Previously exhibited in New York, Singapore, Auckland, Copenhagen and all around the globe, the arrival of Modified Social Benches to Ibiza will be welcomed with a guided tour that will take place on Thursday July 14 from 20 to 22h, all along Paseo Marítimo with animations around the works and an opening reception at the art gallery Ventana Contemporary Ibiza in Marina Botafoch.
The works will be on display until the end of October.

With the series Modified Social Benches, the Danish artist Jeppe Hein reinvents the form of the public park bench, turning it into a work of art that generates spontaneous self-expression and encourages dialogue. Intended to bring people together in unexpected ways, Hein’s benches are conversation starters and people magnets and they add a fun touch to the public space. With their modification, and through the action of the spectator the pieces become active and foster exchange between the passers-by, thus lending the work a social quality.

Jeppe Hein (Copenhagen 1974) is widely known for his production of experiential and interactive artworks that can be positioned at the junction where art, architecture, and technical inventions intersect, and is also engaged in a lively dialogue with the traditions of Minimalist Sculpture and Conceptual Art of the 1970s.

Among his last solo exhibitions: Brooklyn Bridge Park New York, Public Art Fund, USA (2015); Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg, Germany (2015); LiFE – Lieu International des Formes Emergentes, Saint-Nazaire, France (2014); 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, Japan (2011), IMA – Indianapolis
Museum of Art, USA (2010); Contemporary Art Gallery, Vancouver (2009); Sculpture Center, New York (2007); The Curve, Barbican Art Centre, London (2007); Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris (2005); MOCA, Los Angeles (2005) and MOMA, New York (2004).
